At the heart of Stanley Park near the Georgia Street entrance, lies its horticultural centre. The Rose Garden and Shakespeare Garden form the backbone of the perennial flower beds and ornamental trees and shrubs. The new west coast style arbor literally drips with old fashioned roses and clematis in late spring and early summer while patchwork quilts of annuals liven up the garden with stronger colours later in the season. Once, in the 1930s and 1940s, this was the location of the Park Board's original greenhouses which were subsequently moved to the centre of the city to meet the growing demands of an expanding park system.
The Park Board still grows all its own annual flowers, nearly 350,000 plants last year, making it one of the last bastions of civic horticulture in North America. Don't miss the annual summer carpet bedding display at Prospect Point which annually denotes a special occasion or design in flowers.
